Etching Primer

Me old van is getting a little rusty round the bottom of windscreen so Im going to take it out cut it all away then plate it BUT I need a good etching primer i think, problem is over here If I got a painter to do the job it'll be OK for 6 months or so and then the rust will start coming through again. Im no good at preping or painting but I can cut and shut the rust abd then prep it with etching primer reddy for norm primer and paint can anyone recommend a good etching primer or acid etching primer (dont know what the difference is?) That yellow spay putty primer you used to use is that just a norn thick primer to build up the level again is it not. Any help on what to use on bare metal before paint would be very helpful

Halfords sell etching primer in aerosol cans if this helps. Primer is porous, so you need to paint it with a top coat, otherwise the rust will soon reappear. Etching primer contains an acid to help it to adhere. Use the spray filler on top of the etch primer, rub down then apply top coat.

try to get to a paint shop supplies, and get GOOD quality 2-part etch primer, (they will know a good one) they seem to eat into the metal slightly better than the areosol, versions,
unless it is a small area then use areosol, its easyier...
THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF RUST PREVENTSION IS TO APPLY, HEALTY AMOUNT OF RUST-PROOF (WAXOIL)

to in-side panel, you can also purchase "weld through"
primer which is applied to the inside of repair panel prior to fitting,

Anyone know any good car paint shops in the Leiston, Ipswitch area. Ive got a HUGE parcel of Honda parts comming over from there so I can put a couple of tins of paint in with that lot

Whats the best way to attack this, Im going to pull the windscreen out to get to it all, is it best to grind down the area till I get to clean metal and then cut out and weld in a new bit, if I do cut it out again is it best to make a new piece thats going to fit exact and then spot it all the way round the edge with a mig

I don't suggest grinding rust, it still leaves small bits of rust in the pores of the steel. I usually sandblast rust spots with a small handheld blaster. Here are a few very good products you can check out POR15, Inc. - Stop Rust Permanently - Repair Gas & Fuel Tanks and Rust Encapsulator Paint - Stop Rust and Corrosion I'v used both products and they work excellent. The second link has everything to do any repair/resoration project you can do. I've bought much from them. And the POR I've used many gallons of it on various projects.

Thanks for the info on the products, Ive been having a good read on the net and I dont think I'll go the route of painting any rust killer over the rust as im sure there will be more rust under the rust that will not be killed and start showing through again. Im going to cut out and plate it, etch primer, high build primer then top coat. I have seen lots of etch primers and would like to know what the difference between the 1K and 2K primers are ?
