diagnostic scanner

hi all im lookin to get a diagnostic scanner but confused in what to get
hopefully the diagnostic scanner will be used with a laptop with xp pro with a serial port
do i get a v*g com or elm327,it will be used mainly on alfa romero,fiats,nissan
also do these re map ecu's aswell diagnose fault codes etc etc,also what
s/ware would i use on the laptop

Your not going to get 1 thats going to do all, you will have to spend $$$$$$$$$$ to cover everything, VAG-COM (VAG volkswagen audi group) will do VW, Audi, Seat & Skoda. elm327, as far as I know will only cover engine, then you have G\box, ABS, Climate control, central locking system, Airbag & its goes on and on and on and on. If you do a search here on DK you will find loads and loads of people that have asked the same question

For fiat and alfa you get good coverage with fiatecuscan software and elm interface plus kkl cable.
For nissan there is nissan consult interface (I, II and III, don't know which one covers your cars best).
You can try elm interface with scanxl on newer nissans aswell to get at least obdII codes.

I don't know if you can remap ecus with that stuff.

For Alfas you could use FiatECUscan with elm and kkl cables, you'll be able to do most of them.

To remap ECUs you need Galletto or KWP2000.
