don't even think about it is loads a rubbish M8 I bought one and I had to send it back is not for laptops unless if you want to use it for re-flow only even for that is not good.
I bought T 870A is capable to desolder BGA chip or VGA for laptops, PS3 and Xbox 360 reball the chip and solder it back on without any hassel.

well... I don't use a hot air desoldering station...

I only use a cheap soldering iron with controllable temperature and Chip Quik:

I've done loads of chips now, and it's AWSOME! And if you get used to it, you use very small amount of soldering alloy! You can even reuse what you used for removing a chip!

thanks.......what airflow rate do you find best?
do you need to add solder to refit or just some flux?
is alcohol based liquid flux the best stuff to use?

I use about 400c and quite a low airflow so it doesnt blow any small components out of place. Gel flux works well for me, I put it on before I desolder and then a little more before I resolder it back on to stick the chip in place.

Get some old PCBs to practice on and purposely overheat it so you get an idea of how hot you can get it before it burns/lifts tracks.

Guys, to all of you that havent used, tried the QuickChip.
I recommend and advice to use or check it just once. You will be atonish how it works!!. It doesnt matter if 8 or 56 legs once you aplied it over chip, it takes ot longer than "seconds" to remove it from board.
After that just a little desolder copper o ver board and it remains as new. The same over the chip legs to remove any rest, and voila!! Job done.
After you used it once.....you realise it is a MUST among all your others tools/ stuff.

    Regards.

I use Weller WSM-1, Aouye 852, Weller WHP3000 preheater and Weller WQB3000 with OPS.

Weller is the best choice, in my opinion of course.

i'm still using an old metcal stss soldering station must be 20 years old now everything else feels like a lump hammer in comparison. I can switch from a tiny point tip to a 20mm chisel and be up to soldering temperature in a few seconds. Can't stand pace and weller although I do like the pace miniwave tips.

I agree IR is best for bga. when working on intel mainboards we had 98% success with small IR station that cost a few grand for bga repair. intels own automated hot air ?78000 machine was 76% success .

Have a cheapie atten hot air stations for 45 quid delivered and prefer it to the aoyue and pace ones as there is no hose so its lighter and easier to manoever and quieter.
