Default sync problems playing films off external hdd

I have an Iomega 1tb hdd and sometimes on films the sound will go out of sync with the video gradually getting worse and I find myself Watching mouths instead of the film itself.
Is it a read issue with the drive?
Its plugged straight into the TV USB port, same issue through PS3

Have you tried to run it on PC, i had same problem, it was caused by bad codecs, also try different players, for me bsplayer and gom player do the job
