    Default laptop port issue

I have just bought a usb to serial port adapter with software to create a new com port on my laptop. As far as i know it has been installed properly and the device is working. It has created a com port 4. When i try and update the firmaware to my eurovox after clicking download it flicks between com 3 & 4. I know that com 3 is in use by something else. When i click start it cant find my box and asks me to select a com port. So of course i select com 4. Once I have done this it just says waiting for the device to reply or something like that. how can I fix this please???
