Some right cricket scores in there mate kind of shows the level of shit you had to compete against en-route.
Credit where it's due though you can only beat what's in front of you and Liverpool were the best of a bad bunch back then.
exactly, but someone must have played the spanish or italian champs! 1978 was even easier. because we'd won the league, we got a bye in the 1st round.. played 7 games....
in 2005 we played 15...... but in 1979 we were drawn against.... notts forest... fixed?? and dont think sepp blatter and platini were involved!!!
    YNWA..

    Hibernian ?
    Sarajevo ?
    Gornik Zarbrze ?
    R.Madrid
    Benfica
did that make you the best of a bad bunch ,it still made you champions of europe didn't it?

i think thats the point its harder to win now most games in the old european cup were more or less a bye until about the semi final pretty much like the run you highlighted of ours and our previous runs in the 50's and 65 i think our record win is 10-0 the competition was that good in the early rounds

Typical manc comment "the best of a bad bunch" So before football began in 1992 everyone was bad eh. The fact remains we have won it in both formats the old and new, only Madrid and Milan having won it more than us.( eat your hearts out mancs )
so being a fan of one of the biggest and most successful clubs in Europe i can say it was harder under the old format when you had to be champions to enter it. It hurts you that we won it four times that way and were runners up once so you try and undermine our achievements. Under the present format you can finish in the top four and still win it, so it's not a champions cup anymore is it, it's just the name of it now.

Both clubs have proved that you dont have to be champions anymore to win it, infact we could well have won it for the sixth time in total and second time under the new format, and it's well known we've been a spent force for many years, so it's not really that hard to win is it ?

    THE TRUTH
    The Hillsborough Independent Panel. 12/09/12

Today's report is black and white. The Liverpool fans were not the cause of the disaster.
The panel has quite simply found 'no evidence' in support of allegations of 'exceptional levels of drunkenness, ticketlessness or violence among Liverpool fans' and 'no evidence that fans had conspired to arrive late at the stadium' and 'no evidence that they stole from the dead and dying'.

Hmmmm sittin here thinking and cant really remember anyone getting a bye past the first round, and a first round bye wasn't always the case. I could be wrong though so enlighten me as to who and when did anyone get a bye until about the semi final.

if you read the post bd it says more or less a bye

this is with regards to the competion bring largely very weak in the early rounds most teams in the early stages of yesteryear would not get past the prelimanaries for the champions league now

for example i cant remember many welsh or irish teams in the champions league but they made the old european cup

yes i know you got forest once but that was a bit out of the ordinary most early teams in the draw were pub teams and it shows in the results

welsh teams have never been allowed into the european cup. not sure what the rule is now about their league champs entering the c/league. in the "good old days", all the big clubs could play each other in the earlier round which left it open to "lesser" teams. also, with the break up of the soviet block, european football has probably doubled its size.

yeh your right i opened me mouth without thinking and generalising but there was a huge amount of lesser teams and lots of rubbish to play the competition is now much tougher to win you have the best teams from the best leagues you do not get easy rides to the CL final.

Anyway we will agree to disagree because it will go around in circles i think its harder now you lot think its harder before

But hypothetically if just say our "busby babes" (without munich) had won the trophy a few times which is not inconcieveable seen as how many times real madrid won it in that era the average age was only 22

i think its fair to say that most liverpool fans would not look at the european cup in the same the same way if we had won it 3 or 4 times in its original form i think the main reason the protests are of it being harder is not of it being so it is just to heighten the achivement of winning it 4 times and also knowing that at the same time we cannot get a time machine and alter it so you have a cover story just in case we get more than five

then it will be we only won the real one once

i dont expect a fully honest answer and the question is only hypothetical but its certainly true

no mate, far from true... winning the e/cup, for me anyway, is as great an achievement as winning the c/league. if you had won it 10 times under the old format would not make me any more anti you lot. had great respect for sir matt and what he achieved. same for celtic ,forest and villa.
