the biggest problem is me, i dont know that much about computers. but here goes.................i have a compaq presario 2100 that is running slower than treacle. its been messed around with by my sons and daughter, none of compaqs hot keys etc work anymore. i have the windows validation problem and around 50 programmes running in the back ground. and thats just for startters i should imagine.
im running xp proffesional and the lappy is around 7/8 years old, but when running ok more than enough for my usage. im also skint so cant replace it.
Ta,
mick.
Backup existing files, download an up to date windows xp disc (look for one with sp3 included), put disc in drive, make sure optical drive set to boot. Boot disc, format, install, install drivers, install required applications. Good as new, you say its a bit old could also try a performance version of xp or give linux a try if you're feeling adventurous.

First back-up all personal documents and pictures you want to keep (email them to yourself if you cant back-up)
No point in installing XP again until you have cleaned up your laptop first.
- Delete all cookies
- Delete all temporary files
- Delete all unnecessary programs (via control panel, remove programs function)
- Shut down all unnecessary programs that are running in the background.
Restart the laptop and you should find it an awful lot better, its not that its old its that too much is going on at once and needs to be stopped.
Let us know what happens when you get that far.
Thanks
Also download and install malwarebytes to check for malware that may be slowing down your laptop. Also run check disk on your hard drive and defrag it. Also uninstall all unused programs. Hope this helps.
thaks for all the info guys.
my small problem has got a bit bigger, plugged my powerpack in and it went bang!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
waiting to find out if it was terminal. no pun intended
mick.
Not good, can you borrow another charger of the same rating to test?
Hopefully you haven't fried the board, universal chargers can be found quite cheaply. I would recommend these over the standard models as they are similarly priced but much more versatile.
Look at the reverse of Laptop/Charger for ratings before testing, if the MB is damaged it will probably be expensive or time consuming to repair.

I think you must get your saving and get new one
