the transponder and remote maybe in the same unit but
when you open up the remote the transponder is in one half with the battery
and the remote is in the other half
so you can put a new remote half on to the original transponder half
thus making one transponder/remote that starts the car then
you can code in the remote without having to code in the transponder

if it is the early fob with the glass transponder it is possable to remove the glass transponder and insert it in to the new fob giving you a new fob that only needs remote programing
