It depends what class of emulator - as with all things there are easier to use and more difficult ... There are professional emulators that do not need matching via SD, the original ones have written software in such a way that it is enough to enter 4 bytes from ECU to eeprom on the board emulator, and other cheap emulators or crappy Chinese copy of another poor product need matching via SD MB.
