External hdd on VU+ solo problem

Please help. I installed an external hdd to my VU+ solo. I have initialised it on the VU and it works fine to record and store the daily downloaded epg. The problem I have is when the epg is downloaded, the cross epg download location defaults to internal flash. The only way to ensure it downloads to hdd again is to restart or reeboot, once this has been done it works fine again until it downloads and reverts back again to internal flash. Surely I don't have to do this every day. Does someone have any ideas or how to resolve. Many thanks.
