Default hall cam shaft sensor testing

hello, i need some info from those that are wiser than me, i am trying to trace a hall cam sensor fault on a mk1 renault kangoo.
the sensor has three wires but only two go to the ecu, from what i have read would i be right in believing that the wires that go to the ecu are the live and return signal wire, which means that the other wire is ground. also every where i have looked tells me that the number two [ middle wire ] is the ground and that as it does not ground via the ecu that means that i can safely ground the middle wire to chasis while the car is running.thanks for any help and advice.
ps. forgot to add the problem, car starts approx, every other attempt, which suggest it is starting in get me home mode, my clip only show fault in cam sensor circuit, which leeds me to believe bad ground

    What engine/year is it?

You're right in thinking that given three wires one wire will be an ignition switched live, one an earth and the other a signal wire.

I'd think that the live is the one most likely *not* to come from the ECU, but then again it's french...

hi, thanks for your help, it's a mk1 kangoo with a k9k engine 1.5 dci, i now think that you may be right i found more info that suggest that the sensor grounds through the ecu and the live is external, so if i test for continuity between sensor and ecu (wires only) i can find the live feed but i still need a safe way to locate the ecu ground.thanks again, eeze.

The signal will most likely be the middle one I reckon.

    Camshaft sensor:
Pin 1 is earth through pin 2E3 of ecu, pin 2 is signal wire to pin 2E2 of ecu, Pin 3 is power feed from pin 87 of the system relay
