Why do you need to do this?
i guess that buffetw is changing ecu on vehicle with one number of pulses, with another ecu which needs another number of pulses....
If it is for use with an after-market ecu, than it's a very crappy ecu. Most decent after-market ecu's will allow you to use a 60-2 crank signal.
I ferequently convert car's to 60-2 when using Motec, just to name one.
@ dimitar, guy already has solution that he used before, he wants something cheaper, so don't say it's impossible...

They've have 100's fail in the Aussie heat.
It is for a Delphi ecm.
Inductive pickup.
Lingenfelter also makes some PWM devices that defeat traction control events that could be easily made.
I'm have a theory Bob Bailey, ex gm engineer/calibrator is designing the devices.

the current product that is sold in a potted electronics box is burning up due to heat. I'm trying to reverse engineer this box to create a better one that is more durable.
IM not saying its impossible but it would be pain in the ass to make it work. I have been working a lot with haltec,motec,megasquirt,emerald EFI systems which are quite annoying when it comes to crank signal processing . They all have bugs and are very sensitive on crankshaft sensor signal.OEM ecus are not better either but the manufacturers overcome this problem with a lot of tests and experiments.A bad ground , bad spark plug, faulty plug cable........etc. can make the RPMs float around plus the crank signal modification make things worse.
buffetw, could you measure maximum pp voltage on that crank sensor that gives 58 impulses? On high revs that is....
I don't know whats in that box, but, bidirectional TVS diode(between signal wire and ground) could be solution to your problem....
I really can't see any reason to have something that would overheat inside...it's not driving any actuator or something like that....
Some of those crank sensors produce high voltage when on high revs(24V pp ac is normal on idle) even 100v is possible.
Maybe that's burning your electronics.
You could easily limit voltage to desired value with tvs diode.
