    Default Astra H 1.6 Z16XER Non-Start

My friend has a 2007 Astra H 1.6 (Z16XER engine) and it won't start, doesn't even crank. All dash lights come on, but won't start.

He took it to a garage who checked the earths, power, starter relay, starter motor, and it wouldn't even let them connect the laptop up to see if that shown anything, it just said "no communication".

So the mechanic said he thinks the ECU is no good, and suggested a replacement and he's been quoted ?800.

So I was just wondering if anyone else had any ideas what it might be?

If the ECU does have to be replaced, would he be able to get a second hand one and pay someone to transfer the IMMO data from the existing to the replacement, and then just program the new VIN number in with op-com?

    This is his ECU

I've had a quick look on google and found this company who reset ECUs...would that be sufficient for a second hand one? - Vauxhall Opel Simtec 75.1 75.5 and 81 ECU Reset & Pin Extraction - Cartech Electronics

I've not seen the car as he lives over the Pennines, so just going on what he's said on the phone.

    Thanks

    Hi

Have you checked if it will communicate with all other ECU's..........?

What is the story about this vehicle...........did it just die or, they working on it and it didn't start..........

Also check the earth wire on Engine ECU for poor connection........

The earth from the ECU has been checked, that was one of the first things I told him to check when he rang. He said the mechanic even tried 'piggybacking' all the earths with fresh wire just to double check.

It won't communicate with any ECUs. Just text him to double check that.

The car started then chugged and cut out, then wouldn't crank or do anything.

It doesn't even let you run a scan though.

    1) What wireless does it have? Standard or after thought?

    2) look side of battery and fusebox, low low down earth point had one, no nut on it from factory.

2a) what about warning lights, they on/working?

Warning lights come on, and he said that all the earths have been checked. Also told him to try doing his own earth from the -ve.

    Wireless?

I have experienced this same problem before and it turned out to be the CIM unit on the steering column which was faulty.
