    Default VU+DUO TUNER

having just had a new gibertini 1.25m dish fitted with matched feedhorn and c120 lnb ive been running some tests on the weaker sats and ive come to the conclusion that the tuners in the duo are pretty crap imho.. how can a ?379 supposedley "dogs dangellies" box be outdone on signal lock capabillities by a ?50 openbox s9?? although its a linux box and has a great many features why didnt marusys put the best possible tuners inside instead of the poor efforts they have decided on? dissapointed is a massive understatement and ill be putting my duo up for sale in the very near future. ive also run tests on amos@4w and ab7a@7.2w using a tm600 and tm5200d and on both occasions the vu duo was beaten for ability to lock/display a stable picture...."thoughts anyone" regards mdt

i take it you have an original and not a clone,if this is the case can firmware have an effect on tuner,if this is not the case will the new mark 2s have a different tuner?

I had the same problem with my Ultimo and that is why eventually i got shut of it, the tuners are not the best certainly not for feedhunting or even weak fringe reception they just cannot lock and hold a steady signal like an enthusiast box can.

I have nothing bad to say about the Ultimo apart from the tuner capabilities, It's a fine box to just watch satellite and have a tinker about with Linux but for as i say weak and fringe reception the Tuners just are not up to the job.

I did eventually get myself an Uno to replace the Ultimo as its main use is to watch satellite and record and that is it, My other what i call enthusiasts box is the Dr.HD F15 which is exactly the same as the Blade 7000 and TM5402HD may have slightly more sensitive tuner than the Blade but it is on a par with the 5402.

mdt has it spot on the Duo although an old chipset now and coming up to just over 3 years old is a fine box for watching/tinkering/recording but thats about it.

I've read people posting that the tuners in the duo are over sensitive and that some people have fitted an inline attenuator which made things better?

Im no expert, but for the ordinary punter like maself I find the tuners do there job just fine, but as you guys are right into the sat scene I can see where your coming from, but for joe bloggs who just wants to view sly sports/movies etc it's fine.
    Just my 2 pence worth.

Take that with a pinch of salt its complete Bollox i have tested various attenuators inline with the Duo when i had mine and the Uno which has the exact same tuner as the Ultimo and they are even worse, This needs to be put straight they are not over sensitive that was hear say and until people who like me have various boxes to try and not just one brand then they cannot make a valid comment on the subject.

i got my box 18 months ago and had it in storage for 12 months as i was using a dm800pro... the tuners in the uno/ultimo are different although arent much better from what i know. its a crying shame about the duo as i really like it as a linux box with all the bells and whistles but i just cannot get my head around that how a cheap crappy openbox,tm600 and tm5200d boxs, all of which are between ?50 and ?100 and all three have better tuners onboard, ... regards mdt

yep have to agree the duo tuners are not upto it.
I thought my dish had moved out of alignment, but once I connected a dm500s all the channels were showing solid signal strenghth

i like the duo, does what i need, picks up the the sats i want no problem 0.8 e, 13,19.2 and 28, dont realy care for much after that, but suppose others do.
now mines a clone, would it use better tuners?

i know others use clones and pick up other sats, ( that i dont use), no problem.

suppose a novice like myself, its ok, or does what it says on the tin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

do the tuners affect picture quality?

my mate seems to think his old s9 had better picture quality than his new duo.

i used to hear a lot about the vu duo tuners being oversensative - i guess it was all Bs and propaganda by the duo fanboys.
