After all the help I got from here I still can't get my examiner to work like it should. It's multimeter part works perfectly, it's vci card passes all the tests, but cannot communicate with cars...if I measure the K-line with an oscilloscope I only see one impulse when I start the communication and nothing else. And I can only start up the examiner program and windows if I replace my system.ini file with the one before installing the examiner program. If I don't do this windows cannot start and I get an error message saying "error loading linear8.drv". I think I'm missing some drivers or some important files here....I think it might me the display drivers, but I don't understand why won't the installer cd copy these onto the hard drive.
I really wish I could get this old relic to work...
Iirc in win3.11 drivers are loaded from "config.sys" and "autoexec.bat".
You can try to open that files (after examiner installation) in notepad and follow the path and look, if the needed file is there (like c:\win\system). Or comment them out with "REM" or delete the line where "linear8.drv" is loaded.
That linear8.drv seems to be part of graphic card driver from "Chips and Technologies". You can also try to install that driver manually. If you google for "linear8.drv" you can find that win3.1 driver and some tips for install.

It WORKS!!!
I managed to solve the problem. I had a save from another hard drive (that died shortly after), and put two files: CHIP31.386 and VTDA.386 into the windows system folder (after install, windows were missing these two files), and then in system.ini I replaced this line: "display.drv=LINEAR8.DRV" with this: "display.drv=VGA.DRV". And that was all. Works like a charm!
Thanks for all who helped!
The only thing I need now is a CAN/EOBD cable, as it has a small electronics circuit built inside, and I don't have a wiring diagram for that to be able to copy it. Does anybody here have one for sale? Or have any links where can I buy such a cable?

So after a lot of research and the much needed help from member brchip i found out what causes the no comminication board message.
First of all the correct settings to the bios are the following:

If everything works fine after that there is no need to read the rest of this post.
But if at startup you get the message CMOS battery failed/low etc then you have to replace the battery because cant save any changes to the bios.
Battery of this motherboard is the old one styled sealed in a box.
Either you find a new one and desolder and solder again or you can open this box take out the old battery put a socket with a new battery and done!

My way was to open the box by melting the upper surface with the solder.
Another way is with a dremmel but it requires desolder the battery box.

If everything is ok then you get these pictures:

Hi!
I have an old Examiner plus.
I changed the CMOS battery.
The bios settings have been reset.
The dvom card does not work.
Someone can send pictures to the original BIOS settings?
Thanks!

Hello!
I'm an Alfista from Austria and found this Thread very useful, as I'm playing around with 2 "black examiners".
One of them is already working with the old VCI Card. The second one waits for a new CMOS Battery... My solution is soldering a 24pin chip- socket to the Main board and pulluing a new DALLAS Chip in.
But first I'd like to make the really correct BIOS Settings and get the newer VCI/ CAN Board running (It's already dedected by the Mainboard and by the Examiner Software, but after about 15sec. of "connecting to a ECU on a car" it breaks with "no connection possible" I think this could be a problem with the not matching Flash Version at the VCI Card and the Software version.
I've several original Discs here, but not the all the versions of Examiner cd's
I have one Recovery disc (Release 1.0 from July 1997) and the following Examiner Software Releases
3.2 (12/1996)
3.3 (04/1997)
3.4 (09/1997)
3.5 (03/1998)
3.6 (09/1998)
3.7 (03/1999)
4.0 (07/1999)
4.10 (02/2000) - This one was running with the old VCI Card
4.40 (03/2001) - This one was asking for the new VCI/CAN Board but I got no connection to the ECU as mentioned above
5.0 (10/2001) - The last one with a floppy disk
5.0.1 (11/200) - Last one I tried to install until yet
5.30.1 (02/2003)
Has anybody a full list of Releases? Can you tell me the versions I'm missing?
And is there another version or release between the 5.30.1 and the 5.40, which is the last one for the "black examiner"
Many thanks in advance!
Greets from Austria to all of you, fochista!
