Default USB to Serial adapter with Star C3 Head

Has somebody tried using MB C3 Mux on the laptop with no dedicated Serial Port. Instead that using just good quality USB to Serial Port converter. My laptop does not have the PCMIA card slot so option with PCMIA serial port wont work ether.

There are loads of USB to Serial adapters available and I have tried quite a few. Undoubtedly the one with the best driver function coverage is the FTDI. The others just do not fully implement all the serial functions or speeds. I tried for days to get various adapters to connect my linux box via infra-red to my electric meter properly. Had to scope the waveforms and go into it pretty deep to figure out it was the drivers and implementation of the lesser converters after my programming self doubt kicked in.

I think must be this one -> USB RS485 Cables <-

because SD3 cable is rs232 to rs485 full duplex converter.

I have managed to work My DAS with Keyspan USA-19HS
DAS communicates with all Control Modules Except Engine. Kind of weird. Anybody knows what should I do to get it to work properly ?

    I think something is missing
The hardware serial port have the ability to comute lines as far as I know no usb to serial adaptor can't do
I try PCMCIA to rs 232 work with trouble can't sincronize line and all C2 C3 and C4 fail
I think this treah is wrong
