A cannon used to hurl marijuana over the border from Mexico to the US has been seized by police.

The makeshift device, consisting of a large plastic pipe and a metal tank using compressed air from an old car engine, was able to fire bundles of the drug weighing as much as 13.6kg (30lbs) over the border to America.

It was confiscated in the city of Mexicali after US officers discovered a large number of packages of the drug seemingly launched over the border.

The latest discovery follows a spate of similar home-made cannons being seized over the past few years, the Mexicali Public Safety Department said.
