Default Samsung Galaxy S4 Root question.

Ok been using an Apple iphone for years and years, jailbroken etc, now I've decided to give the android phone a go, my question is what are the advantages of rooting my new S4, and can you just download apps like you do for an Iphone that's jailbroken, cheers.

You don't need to Root the phone to get free apps.

Menu > Settings > Security > Unknown Sources... Tick the box.

You can now download apps from any 3rd party source. I use Aptoide & Blackmart Alpha. If you can't find them in the Play Store just google search them & download direct from their websites.

I don't see any point in rooting s4 or s3 for that matter unless you plan to use it for developing. Battery life is pretty good without having to remove system apps as was necessary on s1/s2. Go launcher ex is free and will allow you to do all sorts of custom mods to ui including hide any unwanted apps including pre installed system apps. If you do decide to root you won't be able to use any online banking apps as a rooted phone is seen as a security risk.

Yep download a cracked .apk file and install it as was mentioned above. The first time you try to install a third party app it usually asks if you want to turn on allow installation of this party apps. Good luck finding a cracked Tom Tom app that works for any length of time. Especially on the newer flavours of Android that are run on the galaxy's. One word of advice well three actually ' don't use luckypatcher ' it will screw with your phone and leave all sorts of sh*t on it.

Although not the best, CoPilot live is free & runs from a downloaded map. You get one free map, just like a Tomtom.

Just check the routes it gives you as it doesn't always find the quickest or shortest route. It also likes to take you through city centers rather than avoid them.
