Default Windows media centre issue :(

I have been for the last day or say, trying open load windows media centre unto my lappy, without success. I have just read that now I have windows 8 I will have to pay for it. Is this true. If so how do I get around this probem. Up until a couple days ago I was able to stream to my xbox now I can't . HELP. Thanks in advance for replies.

with windows 8 it has playto built into it.
just right click the file you want to play and select playto,
select your xbox and it should just start streaming it, providing you have the correct codecs installed.
