If he's willing to wait a little longer, the Galaxy Note 3 will be launched between July & Sept (I hope. Seriously want one I do.)

I've just picked up a Galaxy Note 2 for a veritable bargain due to the imminent arrival of the Note 3. The Note 2 is a quadcore with 2 gb ram and a potential 128 GB HD. If you buy the 16GB internal memory there is a trivial procedure to switch the external micro-sd card to virtual internal memory and, should you need to, rooting is well documented and straightforward. Mine is now running all applications that were being done on my laptop, including giving powerpoint presentations with embedded videos - it's a great device that also works as a 'phone. All in all, more technology than most will need and, unlike Apple, not excessively locked down. In summary, for most purposes the Note 2 is superb, now relatively cheap and avoids the jailbreak issues of iphone. I'd recommend the Note 2 unless there is a very specific reason to wait for the Note 3..... hope this helps.....
If it doesn't solve some fairly immediate need, it's almost certainly over-designed. Linus Torvalds

Another sammy fan here I have galaxy s, s2 and currently use s3 wife has s3 mini, but my advice is to stay away from the mini all the full size galaxy's have been and still are faultless and much more robust than they feel. You will see a damn site more iphone with broken screen than sammy. Make sure he gets holds of the s4 first, they can be a bit of a stretch to use one handed. The ideal Samsung for me would be the note in an s or s2 shell.

The Mega only has a dual core processor. The Note 2 is what you should be looking at, if not the Note 3.
