Ubuntu 10.10 Retail

Some time ago a group of hyper-intelligent pan dimensional beings
decided to finally answer the great question of Life, The Universe and
Everything. To this end, a small band of these Debians built an
incredibly powerful distribution, Ubuntu. After this great computer
programme had run (a very quick 3 million minutes...or 6 years) the
answer was announced. The Ultimate answer to Life, the Universe and
Everything is...42, and in its' purest form 101010. Which suggests that
what you really need to know is 'What was the Question?'. The great
distribution kindly pointed out that what the problem really was that
no-one knew the question. Accordingly, the distribution designed a set
of successors, marked by a circle of friends...to ultimately bring Unity
to all things living...Ubuntu 10.10, to find the question to the
ultimate answer.

And with that, the Ubuntu team is pleased to announce Ubuntu 10.10.
Codenamed "Maverick Meerkat", 10.10 continues Ubuntu's proud tradition
of integrating the latest and greatest open source technologies into a
high-quality, easy-to-use Linux distribution.

SliTaz roadmap to Stable Version 3.0 - Release Schedule: Spring 2010
Timeline.

* May 2009: Toolchain freeze (glibc, gcc, binutils)
* September 2009 ***150;> December 2009: Finalize package integration, bug squashing session, stabilize new features
* December 2009: Freeze all main package versions (Alsa, GTK, lib*)
* December 2009 ***150;> January 2009: Final tests and integration. Prepare and massively test system upgrade (2.0 to 3.0)
* February 2010: Write the Release Notes to enable translators to do the job
* February-March 2010: Prepare the Website, announce, tag repositories and release 3.0

ISO size and minimal hardware.

The core ISO of SliTaz 3.0 will be under 35 Mb and will need 256 Mb to boot and be operable. The project will also continue to improve the loram ISOs and provide some flavors which will boot and still be usable with less than 128 Mb of memory.

Historically the ISO size was around 20 Mb to boot with 128 MB. With 2.0 the minimal RAM to load the core was 160 MB and we provide official flavors or web boot to use SliTaz with less memory. So the goal is always reached: provide a fully featured, fast, light and compact OS for modern hardware, but also usable on older machines.

Increasing the core ISO size will let us have support for UTF-8 and more hardware, we may also include a few more applications.
Toolchain & Kernel.

SliTaz 3.0 will have a new toolchain and Kernel. The toolchain will include binutils 2.19.x, glibc 2.9 or 2.10.x and GCC 4.3.x or 4.4.x. The Kernel will include all the new and latest wireless drivers, ethernet drivers, drm modules, LZMA patches and much more.
i18n.

SliTaz 3.0 will have better internationalization support, the goal is to translate all the slitaz tools, utilities and boxes using GNU gettext standards. Contributors will be able to use graphical tools such as poedit to make translations. The labs also have a i18n project to easily upload files to be included in the distribution. The locale packs will also have more translated application(s) messages for the core system and some extra packages for applications such as Gimp, Abiword, Gnumeric, etc.

SliTaz 3.0 will have full UTF-8 support and will use standard PO files for the translation of all SliTaz related tools, boxes and utilities.

We may also provide an official Asian (at least Chinese) LiveCD flavor. The SliTaz web site is now translated to Chinese and the translation team does a really good job. But including Chinese fonts into the core is not possible if we want to stay under 30 Mb, so having a flavor is the best solution.
Xorg.

Update Xorg to 7.4 or 7.5 if the stable release is published in time for 3.0. Updating Xorg is a huge task and a lot of testing is needed, so we will have packages ready as soon as possible in the cooking repos. With the new version we'll provide support for DRI and more graphics cards. The SliTaz utility to configure a X session (tazx) will be adapted and radically improved. We will also have a new boot option to install Xorg (screen=xorg)
SliTaz boxes.

Improve all the SliTaz GTK boxes (wifibox, tazusbbox, mountbox, etc) and code more interfaces to improve desktop user experience. SliTaz 3.0 will ship a box to configure: wbar (wbarbox), crond (new tab in tazctrlbox), ssh-scp (sshbox will replace scpbox and include more features) and more...
Packages integration.

SliTaz 3.0 will have the packages database frozen much earlier than 2.0, so more testing can be done and more bugs can be fixed. Packages must also follow the SliTaz philosophy: stripped down, following FHS, no files in /usr/libexec --> /usr/lib/$PACKAGE, provide desktop files and custom configuration files. We must also update the documentation and write howtos. The TAGS variable can (must) also be used, so we can improve search results.

Msdart 6.5

Microsoft Diagnostics and Recovery Toolset (MSDaRT) 6.5 helps diagnose and repair a system that has trouble starting or has other issues. When you start the system using the Emergency Repair Disk (ERD), also referred to as Boot CD for MSDaRT, a System Recovery Options dialog box appears. A graphical environment and a command-line console are available. The command-line console can be opened by clicking the Command Prompt option in the System Recovery Options menu. You can access any Windows? 7 or Windows Server? 2008 R2 file system, which includes FAT, FAT32, and NTFS. Microsoft Diagnostics and Recovery Toolset is available on the System Recovery Options menu. Clicking MSDaRT opens a detailed MSDaRT Tools menu which presents various recovery tools.

Norton Ghost 15

NGhost 15 is really good at what its main function is. To make a perfect image of your computer to allow easy disaster recovery or easily move from one computer to another when upgrading. It even supports off-site FTP copying, but it can be quite tedious if you have images of several gigabytes over a home internet connection.

It also offers file backup, but it lacks some basic functionalities found in other competing products. For instance, you can't exclude specific paths from a backup. I want to backup my iTunes library, but I want to exclude the Podcasts folder from the backup. Can't do it. Another big caveat is that off-site FTP isn't supported for file backup. I can't figure out why Symantec couldn't implement that. That would be my real reason to use FTP. I already have a web hosting account with lots of space. File backup takes much less space than full ghosting so that would be fine to replicate over FTP... but alas... I can't rely on NGhost 15 for that. Pretty much all competitors are better than NG15 in this regard."

PartedMagic 5.8

The Parted Magic OS employs core programs of GParted and Parted to handle partitioning tasks with ease, while featuring other useful programs (e.g. Partition Image, TestDisk, fdisk, sfdisk, dd, and ddrescue) and an excellent set of documentation to benefit the user. An extensive collection of fileystem tools are also included, as Parted Magic supports the following: ext2, ext3, ext4, fat16, fat32, hfs, hfs+, jfs, linux-swap, ntfs, reiserfs, reiser4, and xfs.

Hiren's Boot Cd 12

Hiren's BootCD is a live CD containing various diagnostic programs such as partitioning agents, system performance benchmarks, disk cloning and imaging tools, data recovery tools, MBR tools, BIOS tools, and many others for fixing various computer problems.[2] As it is a bootable CD, it can be useful even if the primary operating system cannot be booted. Hiren's Boot CD has an extensive list of software. Utilities with similar functionality on the CD are grouped together and seem redundant; however, they present choices through different UIs and options in what they can do. Hiren's Boot CD also provides the option to boot in "Mini XP Mode," a very simple, but usable, version of XP with all of Hiren's tools available.

KAV 2010 rescue

Kaspersky is one of the leaders in the security software industry today. KAV Internet Security is known to be the best protection from all sorts of malware and spyware.

But KAV Internet security provides you the real time protection. Many times we are faced in a situation, when the computer is so heavily infected, where it is not possible to even boot up the system, what to talk about using it and running the antivirus and security applications.
stopzilla

This has happened recently with one of my friend and I was contacted for help. The best solution in such a situation is to format the system and start afresh, but that solution was not applicable here, because that poor soul was not having the backup of her hard disk, which contained some of her research papers.

And so, I advised her to try her hand on one of the Bootable Antivirus CD Disk, about which I have already written in a series on this blog. I advised her to try her hand on KAV Rescue CD for Windows first, and I was happy to note that she was able to get her system operational within one day.
