Default Satellites.xml - what is it for?

I have been using an OpenBox S6000HD with BlackHole for about six months now but still feel very ignorant about how everything hangs together.
One thing I have not yet figured out is what is the purpose of satellites.xml and if I update it what do I need to do afterwards? Also how do I update it? I know where to to download it from, but am not sure where to copy it to as I have read conflicting advice on various forums.

If anyone knows of any good reference on Enigma2, please let me know. Is it essentially just another Linux distro with addons specifically for STBs?

The Dreambox/Enigma2 section on this very Forum has everything you need to know, the sat.xml file holds the satellite and Transponder data only if you update your channel list with something like Catseye or Vhannibal then the sat.xml file has already been updated

At least I have the correct forum.... Unfortunately there are 1000's of post to trawl through...

I have no idea what Catseye or Vhannibal is... As I said I am still a newbie when it comes to STB's and don't really know how it all works. What I mainly want is be able to watch specific channels on Hotbird.

If satellites.xml only holds transponder data, where does channel information come from?

Generally people would search the forum first as you can probably guess your not the first to answer this question, and to be honest being a newbie to these type of STB's is not a good idea what you should have done is investigated how Linux Enigma2 operates and then read all documentation regarding this.

The Tutorial section is a good place to start: DM800 - DM8000 Tutorials

Everything you are likely going to ask in the future i can guarantee has already been answered in the Enigma2 section
