Default Smart meters will save only 2% on energy bills, say MPs

Smart phones could make smart meters redundant, said the MPs

Installing smart meters in every house in the UK will save consumers "only 2%" on their annual bills, a committee of MPs has warned.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) said that, on average, consumers will save just ?26 a year.

MPs also warned that the technology could be out of date by the time the roll-out is complete.

The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) said smart meters will lower bills and make switching easier.

Installing the meters - which begins in earnest next year - will cost ?215 per household, or ?10.6bn.

Consumers in 53 million homes will be charged an annual amount on their bills to cover the cost, peaking at ?11 a year in 2017.

The ?26 annual saving does not include the cost of installation.

"Despite consumers footing the bill, they can on average make a saving of only 2% on the average annual bill of ?1,328 by the time the roll out is complete," said Margaret Hodge, the chair of the PAC.

"Even this is conditional on consumers changing their behaviour and cutting their energy use," she added.

    'Redundant'

The Committee also said that some of the technology is likely to be out of date by the time it is installed.

At the moment the meters carry an in-house display, which tells consumers how much energy they are using at any given time, and how much it is costing.

The idea is that will encourage consumers to use less electricity and gas.

But the MPs said customers could receive similar information on smart phones.

That could make the in-home displays "redundant," said the committee.

DECC said there would be no up front charge to consumers for having a smart meter installed.

Energy minister Baroness Verma said: "Smart meters put power into the hands of consumers, bringing an end to estimated billing and helping people understand their energy use.

"The nationwide rollout is part of the Government's complete overhaul of the UK's energy infrastructure which will revolutionise the market and support the development of smarter electricity grids.

"It will help reduce consumer bills, enable faster, easier switching and give households control at the touch of a button," she said.

The project has already run into delays, and has been criticised elsewhere as a waste of money.

so you will save ?26 a year maximum, but you will have to pay ?11 year more on top of your bill, so save ?13 maximum BIG FERKING DEAL FFS, and the ?13 saving will be maximum, most peeps who use a lot less wont see any saving, so really paying ?11 more a year for nowt its going to cost ?10.6 bn minimum, so if the govs paying for it its coming out of every ones taxes, if the energy companies are paying for it your still paying for it with your bills, so really we are all paying the ?216 per household cost and ?11 per year extra on top off our bills, nothing smart about all this ffs

The "Smart" part of it is charging customers more while making them think they will pay less.
Typical multi-national and government policy to extract extra cash while making themselves look or sound good.

Its not to save you money, there to help the energy company switch your power off quicker if you haven't paid the bill!!!
Watch out for variable pricing where your pay per unit based on your ability to pay, hence old aged pensioners will probably pay three time the price of a savvy youngster
cos they never read the bill. Energy will cost three times as much when coorie is on and five times as much when the footie it on and free when cmorron is on tv..

It's there to make the energy companies more money. Have you never wondered why they like you to pay bills online or send you the statements via email? You didn't think it was to save you time and money did you? It's to save them having to pay for toner, paper, envelopes, postage, admin work, having to pay staff to process your cheque payments etc. Does anyone really believe that companies do things to save you time and money??? really

When I bought my house in the 90's it was a new house. I was told by Yorkshire Water that their policy for new houses that they *must* have water meters fitted and that was that. My house had a water meter, so what.

2 years later I got a nice letter from Yorkshire Water informing me that "If I wanted I could transfer onto the old rate system for my water bills if I wished", now isn't that kind of them to make that offer.

The only reason for that offer was that, and you guessed it, my water bills were not making them as much as if I had been on the old system. Needless to say I told them to ck off and go boil their heads. Even when I had 4 kids living at home my bills were still less. Money grabbing basseds, tell me I have no choice - but then they give me the choice when it's to their advantage where they can screw more money out of people. If a company offers you a choice after giving you no choice.... it's only because your new choice will cost you and make them more money.

Spread the word. If you use the pastic bag material that computer circuit boards/chips come in and cover the meter they can't read it by WIFI. Not very smart eh.

Easiest way to calculate would be to define the price of a unit properly. That won't happen
