    Default Flashing a DM500 - Help please

Trying to flash my DM500-S -
But there's no serial port on computer. I found a usb to RS232 adapter (cant find the drivers !) which has a Male RS 232 plug, as does the DM500, so can't use this cable (adapter) to connect them together (male to male). My question is, should I use a Null cable that has Female connectors on both ends, or a Rs232 cable that has Female connectors both ends?
Plus is there a differance between a clone and an original box, in terms of the image to be used? if so how to I check if I have a cloned one or not?

    many thanks
