While we're waiting, a tip for everyone on these 2003-2006 GM trucks. No speedo and odometer not counting, no check engine light and transmission shifts fine (rules out bad VSS). The problem isn't in the cluster, it's in the VSS circuit from PCM to cluster. Seen a couple with aftermarket stereos wired wrong, VSS is used in factory radio for speed controlled volume. Another with VSS circuit grounded somewhere, didn't bother chasing it, just ran a new wire from PCM to cluster. A bad factory radio can also cause this, seen once.

I am trying to program the mileage for the truck, I bought just a basic eeprom programmer that said it was compatible with a 25 series chip but it does not read. I was wondering what hardware is compatible with the 25020? My other question is that while reading through the forum here it "appears" as though the function of the trans temp is also stored on the same chip or is it on the other similar chip nearby? I'm assuming once I figure out where that data is stored I can dump a file from a cluster with trans temp to turn it on?

The original cluster was stolen out of the truck after I had put an escalade kit on it and had the dealership program it for the trans temp gauge. I have a cluster in it now with almost 300k miles and at first I was just wanting to change the mileage back to what the truck actually has but it seems like it's possible to program the other features as well. It would be much easier to pay someone again but I guess I like doing things the hard way, I have converted this truck to power windows and locks and auto air, so I might as well figure this out too.

Basic programmer may not work for that, depending on what it is, I have seen a lot corrupted by cheap programmers. The chip is a S95P02 right beside the display. Cheapest solution for doing these is a Digiprog, under the Avalanche option for the mileage, then Hummer H2-2007 for the hours. With Digi you can clip right to the chip without removing.

To turn different features on and off, like the DIC is not in the eeprom, it's in the processor flash. Some clusters you can't add a stepper motor for the trans temp without programming the flash but if the cluster came with a trans temp gauge it should be be plug and play.

I should add, the 25020 programmer will probably read the chip, but may not write correctly, then you have a corrupted eeprom. If you get a good read, you can repair the dash using a 25020 from a 99-02 dash, and write the file to it. Just be very careful if you need to unsolder the eeprom, the pads are very fragile and come off easily if overheated.

I know because I got stuck when first starting and that's how I fixed it.

I'm assuming I'd need a tis subscription to reflash the processor?

This is the chip this cluster has, I actually found this forum while trying to figure out what series the chip really was

You can do it if you have a J2534 pass thru device and TIS2000 program, which is available all over the web for free, covers up to 2007. I don't flash clusters, but the trick I believe is to find the right cal number. Someone else may chime in on this part.

That is the correct chip in your pic.

I very much appreciate your help, it would be awesome if someone does know about the flashing.

I have a copy of the tachosoft 23.1 that I was going to use to change the mileage and hours if I could get the programmer to read and write properly, I might try with a different computer tomorrow.

I do have another question. Before I got the cluster I have now, I bought one that didn't work and I thought it needed the resistors to the right of the gear display to be resoldered because I had to do that to my original cluster. However, it didn't change anything, nothing works except the back lights. Any ideas?

if you have a working board in your truck why go back to the non-working board?
