Default BMW E39 M5 WinKFP - Flashing ECU error

Hi all, i'm struggling to flash ecu soft for newer version. Tried Winkfp, DIS and SSS/Progman they all failed due to unknown error. In winkfp i've tried both comfort and expert mode. In comfort mode it suggests an update and tries to write the file but fails at ~18%. When that happens ecu is not responsive - obc shows 'ecu failsave program' error in cluster and car cannot be started. The only way to fix it is to go to expert mode in Winkfp and re-write original program file to ecu (.prg). I've also tried to separately write program file of updated ecu but it fails the same way as in comfort mode. iIf i attempt to write just data file (.0da) tool says that ecu is not compatible...
Does anyone has idea what might be wrong and how to go around it?
    Many thanks in advance
