That is not required for recording. Ext3 and 4 are only required for linux functions but the hdd can also be formatted to fat32 for recording functions however if you choose to initialise the hdd through the menu system it will automatically be formatted to ext4

It was something I read on another forum to cure this problem and something I always do when setting up a new box, it might fix exhumed's problem but it might just be the fact these boxes are so new that the firmware images have some bugs in them.

yes martin it was the first thing I done, when I tried to timeshift it said error timeshift cannot work as hardrive is using ext4...so then I thought aaaah must be an icompatibility with ext4 and timeshift so for timeshift to work the hardrive needs to be ext3 only so I reformatted again for it still not to work although I don't get an error now it just doesn't work.. so strange, as with other boxes I've set up before (Gigablue Quad plus, vu solo 2, ect) it just works, one frustrated man here atm,

umm something I haven't tried yet is using fat32....but jeez in the year 2015 I'm having to format a 2tb external hd to fat32 just to record? but like martin said this may be a bug, think I should go on the zgemma forums to see if anyone else is having problems?

Exhumed, can't believe I'm about to say this, but perhaps it's time to try another image ie openvix or HD freaks and see if there's any difference.

You could this HD freaks backup image by thomas88, it's not mine so can`t help with any questions on setting it up post flashing but I'm sure you'll manage.

Lol, don't know only tried Openatv and Openvix, but what you've got to lose, the image is made for the H2S so if it works, you could then build you own image using a vanilla HD freaks image and plugins of your choice.

Courtesy of digicon, Official Zgemma Images are:

                    OpenATV
                    OpenHDF
                    Opendroid
                    Openspa
                    Eurosat
                    Italysat

vix4e2 was supported to, but I think they've withdrawn there support now.

Italysat, hdfreaks & openatv are three fully supported images I think there is another one but i can't remember of the top of my head. Vix is patched so is likely to have the odd issue

It may not be formatting or mounting correctly. Did the op check the mountpoints to ensure it's there if it is visible then maybe try formatting with a third party to ext4 or 3. minitool partition wizard is a decent free one

Hi H.H, yes I did check to make sure it was mounted and was visible and had loads of available space, I think a thirdparty tool to format may be a good idea, maybe its a bug in openatv? either way quite frustrating, but then I guess that's the fun with enigma 2, is getting the right image, but from setting up my friends zgemma single core it didn't crash once! so maybe teething problems as I think this new box isn't that old?

I have an h2 that won't initialise or format drives/usb sticks. It tells you it has but it lies. I format them in my quad+ or my uno and then plug them in job done btw all the boxes are running openatv

so maybe it is a bug? so if I format them on my computer in ext4 would that be enough? or does the box need to initialise it? or is initialise just basicly formatting the drive in ext4 and mounting?

You can only format the drive in your computer in ext4 if you are running a linux based operating system as EXT4 is a Linux orientated format, if your running windoze then Fat32 will be the next best option
