There isn't one, but benefits are means tested.... if the government thinks you have the means to support yourself it means you get eff all. I think you can have, and I don't know the exact figure, around ?8k in the bank without losing any benefit? I don't have a problem with lottery winners, good on them for getting the money, all's good. However if I spend all my wages on pay day I don't expect the benefits system to give me some cash for the rest of the month because I spent the money I had. I hasten to add that I don't have a problem with anyone needing help and getting benefits when there is a need either, I like most other people pay taxes in part for that safety net to be in place.

They won the equivalent of 2 years worth of the average wage (more than most people get working all the hours in a day, and oddly enough more than a junior doctors basic pay - but that's another thread) I would have thought wisely spent it would have last around 2 years, or longer had they got jobs. Instead they spent it in 8 months, so spent just over ?6k a month, without thinking anything of the future and in the hope that the benefits system would just give them more money when it ran out. Anyone with any sense knows, first priority with money is to ensure you have somewhere to live and something to eat. Epic fail on their part.

The lotto officials could of confiscated the money and doled it out as welfare payments to them. It would've been 50k less the taxpayers had to pay.

At the end of the day, it's nothing to do with Camelot. The winners are responsible for their own actions and now have to face up to the consequences of their own making.

Gotta say, I feel quite sorry for this young couple... The main issue here is they are unemployed and if they can prove as best they can they?ve spent all the money, then I see no reason why they can?t get benefits.

For me, and I guess most people would agree that spending so much money in such a short time is irresponsible, but the thing is; since when has being responsible ever been a required qualification to receive benefits?

This couple have only lived the dream as promoted by lottery companies when winning a ticket, eg.. Expensive holidays, fast cars, drinks all round for friends etc... where the lottery company?s existence is fully endorsed by government to allow the irresponsible activity of gambling.
