Default Range Rover Sport HST 3.6 ltr V8 2009 Instrument Cluster Problem/Question

I have been asked about a problem on the instrument cluster for a Range Rover Sport HST (2009 ) V8. The guy who owns it has been getting conflicting info from various sources so i thought i would see what you all have to say.

Initial problem was car would not start, indicators not flashing on display but working outside and the Radio and Heating controls have a mind of their own switching on/off at will . Someone looked at it and said it had ' a deeply embedded software problem' but when they refitted it , the car started ok but this time the mileage ,temp and fuel display would not work. Now it has reverted back to the original faults of not starting etc. I don't normally do these clusters but i am thinking it sounds like a Can bus issue or something similiar .
My questions are: Any ideas on these faults, can a used one of these be erased/reprogrammed to the car and what would be required in terms of software tools , programmer etc.

Also, is it true a cluster from a V6 can not be used on the V8 , they look identical and can this cluster be easily powered up on the bench ?

I have attached a couple of images of the cluster.

    Thanks in advance
