Is it normal to experience a significant drop in speed when using a VPN? I signed up with NordVPN and I have found my speeds to be 70 Mbps without the VPN and 30 Mpbs with the VPN through a UK VPN server. Is this the be expected? Anyone else using NordVPN and noticing similar figures?

using any vpn service will cut your default speed to roughly 50%

all VPN collect information about you, I think only privateinternetaccess doesn't log information about users, but they are not for free.
Try changing servers as for nord on the right side of every county you will see menu where you find the list of servers to select from
