Default upgraded to VM 20 MB BB and now worse

was on 10 mb BB with VM for past year and a half, always got a godo steady 9mb speed thru the day and no problems

decided to get 20 mb now so phoned them up and got it done yesterday afternoon and now it is shocking

last night was getting 7MB thru day and highest it peaked at was 11 MB .. waste of money, thinking of going back to 10 MB

anyway is the problem with my PC/wifi router (VM Netgear one) or the broadband cable router as I say nothing has changed other than increase of speed.

what are you checking your speed with..??

I was using Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test but since they moved their server to coventry i was getting 4Mbs.. I contacted VM who sent an engineer out.. he checked my equipt, found no fault then used the following site:

Namesco BroadbandMax ADSL Broadband Bandwidth speedtest | Test your ADSL Broadband connection speed

this site showed a connection of 9.96Mbs on a 10Mb line compared to speedtest.net which showed 4Mb

You have to remember all Broadband providers say "Up to xMb".
I laugh so much when I see Virgin adverts for Fibre optic Broadband to your home. I dont know how they get away with lying like that. They use copper coax.

Virgin throttle all the time and as faster speeds come out it gets worse.
Do you have the old style NTL modem thats silver, as theses are poor with the faster speeds. You can ask for a new one and they shouldnt charge you.
Also check your Coax wiring. Inside and outside your home. The splitters could be causing a problem.

virgin do use fibre optic. the copper coax is only used from the green box in your street to your house. which is alot better than bt etc using phone line.

you will get throttled more depending on your downloading.more u download higher the chance of being throttled. i dont find this too much of a problem becoz u do have unlimited download capabilities where as other providers limit your downloads.

small price to pay if u ask me

You are right, they do you fibre. Not all Green boxes though. But so does every other ISP in the UK.
BT do between Citys and Telco hubs, but its just the way its advertised by VM. Its shown that your home with have Fibre optic BB. But we are many many years away from this.
    Its just funny that's all.

But yeah it works on capping on VM's side. The more you download the slower it gets.
I still would expect it to be faster once you upgrade from 10-20Mb though. Try a nice long reboot of your router too.
    Reboots fix everything ;-)

Had exactly the same problem as jfish. On 20mb and getting absolutely shocking speeds of circa 4-5 mb topping out at about 8mb. A "technician" came out replaced the modem and still no joy. Downgraded to 10mb and my speeds are up! Now average about 6.5mb and topped out in my 1st download at almost 10mb. Struggling to work that one out
