    Default Ford puma valve variator

    Does anyone know if it's normal that the inlet cam can be turned via a spanner on the cam independent of the cam drive sprocket/variator unit, I noticed when setting the cams up to change the belt that if you turn the engine back wards the inlet cam stays still for several degrees, I know I shouldn't be turning it back wards but had I not done so I wouldn't have noticed this, doesn't seem right to me but maybe someone knows better?

    Think this calls for a badly spelt word "centifugal force"

    Can you lock the lumpy stick with a piece of angle iron and remve the pulley just to make sure they is no sheared key ways, but then again you said you were changing the belt, ie it runs rather than a non starter.

    Going to have to say

    this is the variable valve timing on this car the inlet manifold can advance and retard a few degrees google vvti or vanos there are a few blogs and sites with info on this
    its worked by oil pressure not centrifugal force
    the oil pressure at higher revs turns the cam a few degrees

    The inlet cam is variable it will not damage it turning it backwards. (I think it has 30 degrees of movment) But when you are timing it up follow these instructions. When looking at the pulley turn it in a clockwise direction only insert cam locking plate. There is no need to remove the pulley unless VCT is damaged. All pulleys on this engine are not locked by a keyway, if you loosen the securing nuts they will turn. Insure crank locking pin is inserted and replace cambelt.

    When timing it up be carfull and insure all steps are followed if you have bought a Ford belt there is a good instruction book included

    Sorry for the delay in replying, just spotted that this thread had been updated, job has been long gone now, I stripped the variator off and found that it is spring loaded to the fully retarded position so if you slacken the centre bolt (as autodata says) and insert setting bar it will be timed up properly, I just didn't know if it was normal for the cam to have so little resistance to be able to turn it independent of the drive sprocket, car runs fine and makes no noises so I now know that this is normal, thanks guys for the input

    At least unlike sum on here, you 'finished' the thread, rather than had us on the edge of our seats, (or beds)
