    Default XPROG troubleshooting

    Hi,
I'm new to DK, and have no previous experience of programming chips; I only know what I've read here and elswhere. I have bought a Chinese clone XPROG-box to read the code in the Grundig radio for my Smart car. I've installed it on Windows XP. I get an error message when it runs “Access violation at address 005E5666 in module XProgDesktop.dll Read of address 00000000” - this happens on 3 different computers - but it appears to run despite this error. I'm powering the XPROG- box from a 12V input, and have tried USB and RS232; USB seems to work best.

The MPU is a Motorola MC68HC11KA4 and I'm connecting to it in circuit using this adaptor. I've checked and rechecked the connections between the XPROG-box and the adaptor; I've included the optional grounding of MODA and connection of MODB to B4. In XProgDesktop, I choose the device details with 0E57S mask as marked on the chip. I've tried a few oscillator settings based on various posts but leaving it on 16MHz seems to work best. All the authorizations show green.

When I click 'Read' the right hand LED shows green, then red, with the middle LED also red, then the left LED green, then an error message on screen "Device is silent. Timeout error" and the right hand LED stays on red.

I don't have a oscilloscope, but I've checked some of the pin voltages during the attempted read. Vcc is 4.97V and drops to 1.25V when the error message appears, MODB goes to about 0.2V and then drops slowly, while RESET goes to 0.4V and drops slowly.

I'm guessing I may need to lift some of the pins, but have no experience of that. So before I do, can anyone tell me how to interpret the LEDs? Or any other advice?
    Thanks for any help.

Yes, thanks, running as Admin. With all AV uninstalled and no network connection.

I've now lifted Tx, Rx and Reset - with no change in the outcome, still Device is silent. Timeout error

Thanks for any suggestions for what to try next.

I think is a problem with the XProg clone. Are you running 5.70? Had the same problem with a Smart tape player and even tried desoldering the MCU off the board, without luck. Haven't tried running 5.55 version, maybe this would help.

Thanks SAMDoctor. I'm running 5.5.5 (that's what it says, not 5.55?). Chinese vendor is not being helpful at the moment, so you may be right it's a bad clone.

5.70 here, bought this tool just for SAMs so anything else would be an extra. Probably will be investing in something proper soon.

Thanks, pictures as requested, hope you can help. I have now been able to load Xprogdesktop without error (need to install Chinese Adobe Reader!) but still get "Device is silent. Timeout error"

Don't lift and or cut any pin...
Connect all wires, as in PDF shown...
Change in environment / setup oscillator from 16 to 8,644...

Thanks, I have already tried that - all connections as in the pdf (including the optional), and changing the oscillator to 8644kHz. That did not help. After that I decided (from other thread) that I would have to try lifting pins, but to reduce the risk of damaging the chip I cut the tracks (you can see in the picture).

Sorry, I'm being slow - but where is the button for Reputation?

    Right to the thanks button...

It's easy... Not need lift, cut...
Take a look at the picture..
Ground and plus direct on mcu...

    Or your mcu is damaged...

I connected the wires using an adaptor (link in my first post). It does not seem to be easy; I have spent many hours trying different computers, different oscillator settings, different cables, USB and RS232 + 12V. Maybe my MCU is damaged; I will look further tomorrow.

Further tests - I've tried reading an identical MCU in another radio that works, both before and after the attempted reading. Exactly the same error and leds, so I don't think the failure to read is down to a bad MCU.

I've also eliminated the adaptor by soldering the the wires direct to the pins - same result again. So I am fairly convinced I have a bad clone. So do I try to repair it, try for a refund, or give up?
