P1278 peugeot 308 1.6 vti ep6 engine problem help please

Code p2178 coming up and immisions high and smokes on idle after a while but clears when driven until idle again then a puff of smoke.Smells very righ.2009 Peugeot 308 1.6 vti engine .Help please cant get thru mot !!!.Changed all obvious parts, checked timing chain cam setting all spot on run out of ideas.Does my ecu need an update ?? If so how do i go about it please?Many thanks Bill
