This car sometimes refuses to start. It shows something lime "Steering Lock malfunction" on the instrument cluster. The internet is flooded with instructions on how to solve the common issue with the Passat B6 (CE) ESL replacing the microswitches fitted inside it. Frequentily, the depicted error code shows up with another 2 or 3 error codes related to the steering lock, like these:

02818 - Steering Column Lock; Enabling for Electronic Ignition Lock
02811 - Control Module for Electronic Steering Column Lock (J764)

None of these show up in the car I am facing issues with, so I am a bit skeptical about the posibility of solving it just by replacing the switches. Could it really throw JUST a checksum error due to a switch malfunction? Sounds more like a micro/ eeprom error to me. Any ideas?

One option is new lock is only approximately €100, have had some with this same dtc and replacing esl motor has solved the problem
I have also replaced microswitches but never had any with relay failure.
    Hope this helps.

    Hi all,

i would like to say that there is alternative fix for this. Someone might find it helpful.

When you meet this kind of problem and OBD diag. read is showing codes for "Steering wheel lock failure/faulty"

    Solution:
you can just get new or used steering lock that works (be careful that its the same numbers as your old!)

    on your car:
    FIRST - disconnect your battery!
take the whole steering wheel apart to acess the ESL. take it apart too....
desolder two memory chips from the old board and solder them onto your new/used locks board.

when you make it all back together the fix isnt finished...
    1.) connect battery, ingition on
2.) connect diag. via OBD and erase all the faults.
    3.) unplug diag.
    4.) start the car B-)

Works fine, tested. Hope works for you too.

    Any questions go ahead.
