Keihin SH 7055 with KESS ?

I am trying to find a reasonably priced tool for doing KTM 450/500/530/690 equipped with a Keihin SH7055 ECU. It is supposed to be possible by KESS with protocol 506. However tried a friends 4 year old china clone and it reads the unit but refuses to program. Does anyone know if it can be done with a clone or is it the original unit only?

Any other tool that works for those units?

KTM 690 can be programmed with TuneEcu until MY 2013 (ABS and DrivebyWire)
Kess Protocol 506 can read KTM 690 up to MY 2020, but write only to MY 2017 (ECU is Keihin SH72531)
Clone just worked fine on my 2016 690 smcr
