I think (in my experience) that is not tool related it is vehicle. Some can open channel for adaptation, like i audi a4 b7 and some golf models but most of them can't until you erase all remotes first.

I don't have autel but i can't see possibility too add remote on example passat b6/b7 (3c) , i have done tons of them and i could never, with any tool , add remote before reseting channel 0 . Simply channel wont open until there is 0 remotes stored in memory so i don't see how can autel open it....

EDIT: ....and yes, there is option in some tools like FVDI and old avdi that said "input number of remotes and press learn...." but it never worked untile you erase them first

Done many times with Autel IM608, if you choose 'Add remote' it doesn't erase the remotes and simply add a new one.
Tested on Golf 6, Touran, Passat, A3, Fabia, Ibiza, Leon.
