Hi pump failure is very common on these, check that plug and socket to pump is not corroded or burnt, if OK replace pump assembly.

Hi I think the controller for the power steering is built into the pump assembly.

remove battery and casing ,look on top of gearbox just behind thermostat housing, main live and earth are together in shielded plastic casing which is clipped to underside of battery box, thats where our one had worn right through 6mm positive wiring..hope yours is the same...

Check the status of the connectors on the fuse box (Maxi fuse) and power steering, it can heat and make bad contact.

and try to locate the power relay for servotronic and inspect it! if your pump work hard the temp in this relay it will be to big and then stop to work...The reason it failed is the relay for it is inside. Thats what failed. Thus no power to run the pump. Is it common.

Just for information....Info from a BMW chap....over time the carbon brushes wear and the dust falls onto the electronics inside the pump that cause these failures. Also if you have a cooling fan under the pump like on my cooper s, check to see if it spins freely. Sometimes they pick of leaves or stones. Mine was jammed and just by removing it, it now spins ok. These pumps are usually repaired by removing, opening (some connections have to be cut and re-soldered), dust is solvent clean away, lubricated and resealed. Will be recondition mine very soon. It starts to make a lot of noise and the headlights dim when the steering is turned. Hope this helps. This is only one of the problems on my cooper s- the rocker gaskets and clutch are also known to fail.
