Default PIDS and CANBUS (Smart 451)

When the 451 Smart was released in 2007 it had a temperature gauge. When they imported the model to America the Yanks complained that the LCD was too complicated for them so Mercedes made a simpler LCD.

Both types can be seen here: https://fq101.co.uk/how-to-guides/fo...d-display-swap

It is a fairly simple job to swap the LCD and get a temperature gauge on any 451 but the LCD is really hard to find.

Looking at the data streams the fuel level is one 8 bit word with a 2f PID and the temperature is one 8 bit word with an 05 PID.

It seems to me that if I catch the 05 PID and change the header to 2f and feed that to the speedo then the fuel gauge will display the engine temperature. This should work on any car as far as I can tell but I only know what Wikipedia says.

The plan, thus far, is to disconnect the CANBUS at the speedo head and stick an ESP8266 in series. This will transfer bi-directionally all data but will change the headers on the incoming 05 packets to 2f before sendign it to the speedo.

Is there anything available that will do that without me having to resort to soldering and writing software?

Is there anything fundamentally wrong with the idea?
