Hi Guys, A friend of mine(yes I do mean a friend and not myself!) has done an engie swap in a 2000 zafira petrol, he called me this morning and said he has kept all origional wiring sensors from origional engine however, he has connected the battery and with no keys in the ignition he has the dash lights on i.e batt, oil etc..... I am yet to go and have a look but it sounds like an earth problem??? any ideas?

Hey my bet would be on Alternator wiring being connected to wrong terminals and back feeding thru battery light.
If zafiras alternator is anything like Astra you have 2 screw in terminals one permanent 12v+ M6 nut connector to alternator other to battery light M5 nut connector. If he managed to swap them around it could give you those symptoms.

checked alternator wiring also starter wiring, still the same problem.....key in ignition on, no horn etc, engine will crank but not fire, and still has batery light on with keys removed!...It's got me! problem is I'm 10 years out of date, I packed up the motortrade for other ventures ad now I want to return everything has really moved on, too many cables for my liking, give me a good old 2.5 di transit anyday! I need to learn fast and feel lost with code reading, remapping and mileage correction but, I want and need to learn! I NEED YOUR KNOWLEDGE IN ALL AREAS!!!!! PLEASE!!!! also would like some ideas on what equipment to purchase i.e remapping and diagnostic equipment.

Do you have a scanner (even generic) that will read live data? Suppose that not, but IF, apart from readin possible codes check for rpm while cranking just to know the crank pos. sensor/cam sensor is working.
App. you have a wiring issue and it will be of help to have the wiring diags. With switch off disconnect bat post, disconnect bat cable at alternator an put iti out of way. Now connect bat post and put switch on. If nothing changed with all the weird stuff going on, then it's NOT the alternator and vice versa..
Do you have fuel pressure and spark? Can you here the fuel pump work for a couple of seconds when switching ignition on ? Does the car start with carb cleaner?
you can check for injectorpulse with a noid light put in the disconnected plug of one injector. Missing a noid light you just can use a voltmeter with led, should cover the the 6 or 12 volt range. (Take care not to damage the connector pins whlie inserting the probes.) While cranking the led will flash if you got injector pulse.
Just try to provide a little more info so you could be helped better. And if you really consider to get reinvolved in the car biz, do yourself a favor and get a scanner ASAP. Even a cheapo will help you a lot and pay for itself on the first car!!!

Hope this helps, don't hesitate to ask more, Cheers.
