Virginising an ECU

The ECU on my Alfa 147 GTA has failed so I am trying to find a replacement. I understand that a replacement ECU would either need to be virginised to work with another car or the entire body computer and lock set would be required instead.

I would like to attempt virginising the ECU myself. What tools/software do I require? I would prefer to do it out of the car so on a bench.
