    It's necessary for betas, they run out. The latest non-beta (10.6.4) should work (maybe with a nag-screen "outdated, please update"). I haven't tried out yet, so this is my guess.

    I guess most interfaces are from china. The quality differs (soldering, components), but "crappy" often means newer
    interfaces with ft232rl on it or with write protection chips. It is harder to upgrade them. Interfaces with ft232bm/bl are easier, they were used up to version 805.
    If you wanna diy just look out for shematic with ft232bm on it.

    Thank you for the detailed information paro44, I now have a better understanding of how things are.

    My preference is to buy a ready made clone as I don't really want to take the time sourcing the parts or making a board and so on.

    Are you or anyone else able to recommend a reputable seller for a "quality" 805 clone interface?

    I'm not particularly concerned about having the latest software and firmware builds. I'd much rather have an earlier release version of VCDS which can be relied upon.

    You'll spend more money in building your own interface than buying an assembled one.

    Why bother releasing a new beta just for block the interface? You can still use the last stable version without time limit (10.6.4)

    Secondly, if you really wanna use 11.2 you can change date, run a setup date launcher, or even modding the .exe to remove the time limit.

    So, IMO... the release was not just for banning 11.2 but to bring and test new functionalities

    Let me see if I understood: I buy one of those china crappy cables, and after that I reprogram it, and then I'm able to use VAG-COM without the limitations??

    Yes, you can upgrade to newer versions. But BL or BM versions are easier to upgrade than RL versions.

    So, buy a VCDS with a FTDI232BL or BM

    I have a cable which came with the VAG-COM 409 software. It only has two ICs: a LM393 (Voltage comparator), and the FTDI FT232BL. I took a picture of it. The LM393 is soldered on the other side.

    I read that with this cable, I'll only be able to use VAG-COM 409 and VCDS Lite. Is that correct? I got both softwares cracked just to see how they go, and everything seems to be fine.

    But what I'm realising from the posts is that there is another kinf of cable, with a little more hardware on it (like a CAN module), and that Ross Tech is blocking some features in their software via FIRMWARE. Is that why people are reflashing their units: so they can run newer software versions with all the features unlocked??

    If so, what kind of cable should I look for in ebay ? One that comes with a VCDS software? And then I follow the tutorials to reprogram it?

    Another question: is there any way to reprogram the injection tables of a VW? (without speding a lot of money, of course!). I have a 2001 mk4 golf, with 266 thousand Km, and want to play with it a bit =D And my friend has a Passat B3, 1996.

    Your cable is a KKL cable thus CAN is not available.

    You should buy a VCDS HEX CAN OBD2 hardware -> versions 5xx or higher.

    vag com 11.2(FT 232RL),

    And 11.2 with BL:

    Vag com 11.20(FT 232 BL),

    can use the sofware of vag com 11.20 / 10.64 / 10.63 /10.62 / 10.60 (in this only)

    my VAG106 have the same exterior appearance than the one you are indicating , it have FTDI BL, but mine vag106 has a FTDI RL.
