IMHO, It's impossible.

What you are hypothesizing is *quite* possible... Not to sound prejudice, but "those damn chinese..."

I speak from experience. How does the layout compare between the Atmel and supposed NEC uC? Furthermore, has anyone checked to see if Atmel possibly made a pin-for-pin compatible part to replace a NEC part? Shouldn't be hard to determine if the part numbers are etched on the IC's and still legible.

Yes. It's even possible to use with 11.11.0

IMHO, It's impossible.

Well, the problem is, that it doesn't have any kind of engraving. It seems like it had when it was made, but now the engraving is sanded out. Seems like the chinese manufacturer did this in order to make his copy uncopiable, or at least to confuse me...
So I can not tell whether it's Atmel or NEC....

UPDATE... seems like the chinese were smart but not enough! I've wiped a graphite pencil over it a few times, and now I can just about read the NEC word...

I though in something that could work:

1) Decompiling the HEX from the ATMEGA into ASSEMBLY

2) Understand 100% of that code

3) Change the ASSEMBLY in order to work with that NEC uC
