here is a link to the tutorial i am based on, it dosnt say anything about the 5V, are you sure about that? http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums...50/index7.html post #95

You can supply 5v in this way or better is to supply 12v directlly in the obd connector ( pins 4-5 gnd and pin 16 as +12v )
In both of the cases the power supply gnd must be soldered togeter with the programmer gnd
    Good luck

    thank you for your reply.
i saw in few places to connect the usb cable to the pc and the external power supply's 12V+ to the most left leg of the 7805 and the middle leg to the GND of the external power supply and the GND of the programmer to the same GND. will it work?

You need to understand one thing and that is: Atmega is not powered via USB port, you have to power atmega either via programmer or external supply. From my experience it is safer to supply power from programmer than any other way because sometimes LM7805 can be unstable or doesn't supply pure 5 volts - depending on quality. Forget USB cable, it has nothing to do with atmega programming only for FTDI programming.

Yes you can do without USB plug.
only what you need is to supply Atmega with 5V - nothing else more.

Did you ever try without, see what happens or why when you plug vcds interface into usb port only and go to test get message "interface found..." but no firmware version

As my frined mishu_b said you don't need to plugg it into the USB
Maybe you have other issues during the flashing but plugging the tool to the USB it has nothing to do with the Atmega
    Good luck

Powering on by 12V on OBD2 not mean powering atmega too?
Programmer GND is common with 12V GND..
But without usb plugin..cannot programm. Is only a fact, not a problemm (is a "known issue" to me).
