    Hi,

I was pointed to this discussion (Thanks dorcky) in trying to figure out an upgrade for my old 512.4 VAG-COM (clone) cable to a later version (v8 or v9). Here are the pictures of the existing VCDS cable.......

    http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/458/vcdscable1.jpg
    http://img843.imageshack.us/img843/7734/vcdscable2.jpg

Can you pl. tell me where to start in terms of what programmer can I use for this, where to get it from and what is the s/w that goes with that programmer to flash. Are there any tutorials (step-by-step) available for this. I am on WIN XP (SP3).

I am sure there are bits and pieces of this info in the thread and I am trying to read through it as well but it is quite overwhelming and I am pretty much confused.

Thank you for your support and help

Sorry my regular camera crapped out and am using an old sony with no macro.

Meanwhile I'll try to post some info on the chips on the PCB...

Side1 (without LED) of PCB has......

    • ATMEL - ATF16V8BQL 15JC 0141
    • FTDI - FT232BM 606-1

Side2 (with LED) of PCB has.......

    • ATMEGA162 16UA 0553
    • A Three pronged connector L805CV CC10R VW MAR 516
    • Besides the LED, this side has three crystals 6.000, 7.3728, 16.000

The PCB is NOT soldered DIRECTLY to the CAN interface. Three wires from Side1 and Three from Side2 of the PCB are connected to Six pins (Three each on top and bottom row) of the CAN interface.

From this forum, I have compiled the following...

    VCDS_SOFT_DUMP_TOOLS that include

    • FTDI_TOOLS
      • Mprog
      • VCR_CDM 2.00.00
      • vidpidfix.exe
    • PonyProg2000
    • VCDS_805_dumps
      • Ross_Tech.ept
      • VCDS_805_Atmega_162.bin

Tutorial, everything-tutorial (VCDS 805 programming and upgrading)

What are the next steps? Should I build the programmer (parallel port) by using the layout/mappings in the tutorial and then flash the ATMEGA using this tutorial verbatim?

    Thanks
    SB

I'm not sure that was mirrored, just a few pins aren't correct connected (4,5..as I written, but not mirrored)
But I'm to tired now to check your new image, sorry

It is not a question - how much I failed. Mirrored or no - it does not matter. Now, the wires are soldered correctly.
And one more question - do I need something another dump for Russian language software, or should I use something specific VCDS software?

each locatization of VCDS use own keys included in this VCDS version, so english doesn't works in Russian, French.. others and probably viceversa, Russian doesn't works with English

Can You explain it little more? I need the specific software for Russian or specific dump?
    *** *** *** *** *** ***

Heh... I think, now I totally destructed my VCDS...
With 12v power connected (diode flashes green and red),

    Blinking/flashing Indicate cable is works..

Of course! But - NOW - after connection to LPT with 12v power connected and with no common ground it is not flashing... Maybe, something element on device is dead?

I connect it to LPT port...
PonyProg does not recognize my VCDS (error -24).
Disconnect the 12v power, power off my PC. Disconnect the LPT connector, power up 12v again, and the diode not even flashing anymore...

I think, that you mix more things together

+12V into 7805 (Input) create +5V for uC, otherwise uC isn't powered and you cannot program it..
When you connect programmmer, reset is connected and uC is reseted - so no blinking anymore, that is correct

What is UC? As I wrote above, LED no blinking totally - with LPT connected or not, when I connect it to USB... Before, the LED flashes, when the device is connected to USB or when it powered with 12v.

For now, when I try to insert the USB connector into the USB port, for trying to do all the procedure again, the VIDPIDFIX does not recognize the device... (screenshot added)

But the VCDS is still recognized by the OS ("USB-Serial converter" and "Ross-Tech HEX-USB")

? VIDPIDFIX should always works, so what you written is strange.. How can VCDS recognize this cable if VIDPIDFIX not? What say Device Manager, is there some Ross-Tech device/USB serial converter?

WinXP: Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager

When I wrote "VCDS", I mean the device, not a software. I'm sorry if I'm wrong. So, in Device Manager the device present - "USB-Serial converter" and "Ross-Tech HEX-USB", without drivers installed or with drivers installed.
    ----------
So start please reprogram uC, please be 100% sure that LPT is correct.. than we can continue with rest..

Thank You very much for help and attention.

Yes, PonyProg from this forum. Version 2.07c. It has the settings for AVR-micro and Atmega 162 already chosen. And from official site - results are the same...

Found the solution for my problem, it's a software problem, here is the right setup for 10.6.2:

Each translation of VCDS has own keys/serial numbers because official distributor knows cables sold in his country. So you need Russian contains of Atmel eeprom + Russian version of VCDS.

Of course! But - NOW - after connection to LPT with 12v power connected and with no common ground it is not flashing... Maybe, something element on device is dead?

I guess that you erased Atmel chip, so there isn't firmware, so this is reason why LED no flashing. Please try successfully reprogram Atmel with working eeprom contains (in this forum are both), then if you have success we can continue

What is UC? As I wrote above, LED no blinking totally - with LPT connected or not, when I connect it to USB... Before, the LED flashes, when the device is connected to USB or when it powered with 12v.

uC = microcontroller (u=micro) so this is Atmel ATMEGA162 here.. On my side when firmware is alived, LED is blinking only and only then if cable is plugged in the car or +12V is connected to the power.

When I wrote "VCDS", I mean the device, not a software. I'm sorry if I'm wrong. So, in Device Manager the device present - "USB-Serial converter" and "Ross-Tech HEX-USB", without drivers installed or with drivers installed.

Ok, so "cable"; is better than VCDS, because is common use VCDS for software. It Is strange that you have two device in the system in one time. Do you have really some usb->serial converter in PC?

When Ross-Tech is appear, that FTDI chip (it's just usb->serial converter) is successfully recognized. It's very good step to continue. But this is only converter for communication's PC with cable.

When you got "usb->serial converter"; you need program it FTDI eeprom, you can do by PC with proper software (VIDPIDFIX for example),

But for beginning try reprogram ATMEGA (uC)
