    Yes, of course. Buy the "best" cable from fly and after that change some components.

    Can someone clarify what the root cause (wrong output voltage?) of this issue is and how can i do a reliable check on my cable?

    I'd like to identify that too.
    I suspect there is a short or some defective component.
    Upon plugging device in, it drains excessive current, way over what the voltage regulator is designed for, causing the defective component to blow up as well as the voltage regulator itself.

    Telling that "just replace voltage regulator and it should be fine" is nothing but a joke.

    I also suspect that STM chip gets fried as well, judging by its discoloration observed in photos posted in this thread.
    I can calculate ABS module codings for:
    * Continental/Teves MK60EC1 and MK60;
    * TRW systems in Passat B6 / B7 / CC /Tiguan;
    * MK100
    ;
    * Bosch ABS8.2, ABS9.0 and ESP8.2, ESP9.0;
    * EBC 460 (UP!, Mii, Rapid, CitiGo, Fabia, Toledo, etc) New!
    *
    ... and other VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda modules.I can assist with repairing \/CDS interfaces.

    I have done some measuremets with my interface (test bench setup) :

    Not connected to USB/PC (yellow blinking): ~110mA at 12.5V
    connected to USB/PC (green blinking): ~55 mA at 12.5V

    Output pin from MIC2920: 5.01 V

    Seems to be ok for me...

    Exactly... and hope that it will not damage your car CPU or other components in the car...
    This is why I am not using it.

    If I order the components I have to pay about 20% more than the cost of the cable... shipping and all.

    Well.. This probably adds to the theory, that the defect is hardware. And you get smoke only 1st time you connect it or never

    That's why I'm using my V1 or V2 with 415 chip. Nothing is burning and no need to change any chips.

    few and individual MIC2920A-5.0WS can not work more than 12V, please ask your seller to confirm.
