    Default big problem with hd

hi guys got a problem with a acer aspire 5740 laptop and its hd i went to reinstall windows and it says

This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk and it wouldnt let me go any further. is there anyway i can format from a usb stick or run a check disk.?

i know i could connect it up to a desktop pc as slave and do it that way but havent got the cable at the mo so any help would be great.

maybe the HD read as AHCI....you must change to IDE in BIOS so windows installation CD/DVD can recognise the hardisk.
