is it safe to use VCDS 18.9.1 v1 (first release) with kolimers VCDSLoader_v7.2 ? or should we stay on the VCDS 18.9.0 ?

Yes, with "V1" (aka 14.01.2019) work well.

Just got this little cable for my Audi s3 2017; (it's actually written VAG189 on mine)
    https://www.obd2cartool.com/atm-vag-...jav1es87oe3gd2

was able to use it for a few minutes and after that got a message saying to get a valid license/interface (can't remember)
Since then, when i do my test I get the CAN Not ready result. I'd flash the cable using VAGCOM_EEWriteLang (without changing anything on the cable)
But still getting that Not ready CAN status when doing test.

    Can anyone help ?

You use kolimer 7.2 loader? Use loader but with eng 18.9.0. And go to option and do TEST, If CABLE and all is ok Activation should back to Activate status.

Or try use Vag Com HW. And press READ (PRESS WITH CONNECTED PLUG TO 12V) if show you not reapond than you brick atmega162... if show you 0x44 or 0x46. Than bootloader still Life then you can try flashing using VAGCOM_EEWriteLang

I used the VCDS 18.9.exe that was provided with the cable at first (When I started the software you can see a pop up written VCDS loader 7.0)
Used the cable for a few moment and got the message/error when I tried to apply a long coding for a modification.

Since then, I've tried Kolimer 7.1 and 7.2 loader. uninstall VCDS 18.9 and reinstall apparently 18.9 VER 1.0.
Did flash the cable with Kolimer 7.2 utility but unable to get the CAN bus to respond.

The cable is still good, as under VagComHW the result is bootloader is available, ''hardware'' is 0x46 and FW is 1.96 or 1.95 if I remember correctly.

Should I retry flashing the cable ???

This TAN38 three-pin chip, the function is electrostatic protection (ESD), it is used for CAN bus static protection. can work without it.
