just a thought but how about a dedicated thread in each section (one for each brand) that only contains the latest firmware releases for that brand/model with a short description, each post would be a new firmware release (no other posts allowed in thread to keep it relevant/clean), with the option of subscribing to email alerts for each of these topics?
that way a member could subscribe to the topic for his/her equipment and be automatically notified of a new release

Yip that's a good idea. We use this in the Technomate section with the patches. The eurovox section is a bit of a mess at the moment with this kind of stuff but I'm sure it will be sorted soon with a nice sticky for all firmwares.

All firmwares are stored in the download section anyway, which is nice and neat.
