I'm from the BBS era, a bit disconnected for what you youngsters are up to. All my knowledge are pretty much obsolete now (phreacking on my Commodore 64, who does that any more in the era or optical fibre everywhere) but still curious.
Nowadays I mostly modify Commodore Amiga firmware to store as much as possible and save precious ram space. I can make the latest AmigaOS run (well !) on a stock Amiga even though it's not even officially supported.
Also I create modchips for laser printers to allow any toner to be used or finish using all the powder even after the arbitrary manufacturer limit kicks in
